Ankarafantsika National Park
Northwest Madagascar

Ankarafantsika National Park is one of the most important national parks in Madagascar. It is located in the Boeny region (northwest Madagascar), between the districts of Ambatoboeni and Marovoay.

Landscapes and Ecosystems
The park is famous for its large area of dry deciduous forest (one of the largest remaining in Madagascar), combined with savannas, wetlands, and lakes. It represents the typical western Madagascar landscape with vegetation adapted to a dry tropical climate. The Lake Ravelobe is one of the park’s major highlights.

Biodiversity
Ankarafantsika is a biodiversity hotspot:
- Lemurs: 8 species, including the famous Coquerel’s Sifaka (very easy to see), Mouse Lemurs (some of the smallest primates in the world), Brown Lemurs, and others.
- Birds: Over 129 species, with 75 endemic. It is an excellent destination for birdwatching. Notable species include the endangered Madagascar Fish Eagle and Van Dam’s Vanga.
- Reptiles: Chameleons, plated lizards, snakes, freshwater turtles, and endemic crocodiles.
Others: The rare Big-footed Mouse (endemic).

Tourist Activities
- Hiking trails (from 2 hours to full-day circuits)
- Lemur and bird watching
- Boat trips on Lake Ravelobe (great for birds and crocodiles)
- Night walks (to see nocturnal lemurs)
- Guided tours and camping

The park is relatively easy to access via the RN4 road and is well-organized for visitors.
